In the 1970’s, the Santa Ana River Recreation Trails pioneered multi-use public works. As project manager and designer, I developed new bicycle way safety and comfort standards. The engineered bridge crossings were revolutionary. They provided safe slopes and site distances, similar to road design parameters. Research produced tough, pleasant coastal plantings that survived the years with minimal maintenance–an early sustainable landscape. With Ron Pecoff, we pioneered the use of native hydroseed plantings. The River Trails system quickly became the county’s most used recreational facility. The portion adjacent to Angels Stadium found its fifteen seconds of fame in the opening scene of the Disney movie Angels in the Outfield.
